A private citizen with six specific, practical suggestions could once walk into a committee room and have a real chance of some of them becoming law. The mechanism for that existed, and it's been dismantled, not reformed, not improved, dismantled, while most of the province was watching something else.
A promise this important deserves better than good intentions with no consequences attached. I'd like to see that promise backed by something sharper than a signature. This AI covenant just needs a human sword.
None of this requires inventing anything new. Canada has already built a Digital Services Tax, a global minimum tax, a streaming contribution rule, and a provincial data centre levy. What's been missing isn't policy, it's the willingness to keep what gets built instead of trading it away the moment a negotiation gets uncomfortable. Extractive tech will always draw as much value out of this country as it's allowed to. The only question is whether Ottawa treats a fair share as something to negotiate away, or something to guarantee in law.
